There was a programme on Radio 4 the other day about sonic branding. It's something I've dabbled in for other clients but we're to amorphous, existential, meta-logical and possibly polygamous to be captured within a tone.

That said, how about DA-DEEE-DU-DUUURRGH?

Yes that's it

Perfect.....

Very often a writer has an actor or type of voice in mind when writing. It's hard not to when writing dialogue, so good communication between writer and director is essential. Maybe one day we should organise a reading session, get a bunch of actors together in a studio and let a small group of writers try out some scenes whilst recording them.

According to the BBC Press Office, "Badfellas" is broadcast on 5 July at 2.15pm.

Quote
Afternoon Play – Badfellas
Monday 5 July
2.15-3.00pm BBC RADIO 4

Johnny Vegas and Ricky Tomlinson star as a pair of "wheeler-dealers" who find themselves in trouble with the American mafia on a trip to Las Vegas, in this comedy drama.

Danny Brewer and his long-suffering fiancée, Jan, head to Vegas to get married, after many years of failed attempts. But it isn't long before they've lost all their money and the wedding looks doomed again. However, Danny's brother, Bernie, comes to the attention of an Elvis impersonator, who seems to be the salvation they desperately need.

The cast also includes Nicola Stephenson, Rupert Degas, Lorelei King, Michael Roberts and DeNica Fairman.

Or hooking up with local colleges or amateur drama groups might also help. In videogames we often record actors separately, which is not ideal, but with a strong director who understands the big picture and a good cast, it can work.

You can always have the actor record at home and send the files to you for mixing. It's pretty much how I do my stuff, there's simply no way I'd be able to round up enough people to record anything myself.  I think some people would question the chemistry between actors in that case, but it's a trade off if you really want people with the correct accents.

Its not as positive a development as it first seems. The BBC is too thinly spread in too many niche areas and although it has a Global track record of quality, the real money gets spent on core audience grabbers... Strictly, QI etc.

What they are probably hoping for, is to stumble onto something that requires little investment but has a ready made or established audience potential. True risk is long dead in the Corp for good reasons, whch is why only a select clique of production houses get to work on TV and Radio content.

Better the Devil you know, as it limits the risk factor.

A more overt concept thief if Endemol. They have a team who's work is to research and then copy anything remotely innovative. They suck the life out of it first of course, but its proved a succesful formula so far.

Dear whoever,

I was hoping to fence with enthusiasts and professionals about writing with accents... i.e. having crap actors with virtually no accent skills so you write 'Phonetically' and hope.

As it is, usually I just find actors with accents and no concept of their true value, though that doesn't always work.

For example; for a Welsh person I usually have to allow for £50, petrol money and an afternoons supply of bakewell tarts. Trendie Londoners... a little more.

Any suggestions out there?
